Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 (RHDV2) is a highly contagious and often fatal virus that affects rabbits. It has been confirmed in multiple states, and vaccination is the most effective way to protect pet rabbits.
Dr. Kopp has been an active advocate for RHDV2 vaccination, appearing in local media and contributing to public education on the topic. At Priest Lake Veterinary Hospital, the clinic offers the vaccine and works with rabbit owners to establish appropriate vaccination schedules.
The vaccine is generally well tolerated. Most rabbits receive an initial series of two doses, followed by annual boosters. Owners of rabbits that go outdoors, attend shows, or live in multi-rabbit households should discuss vaccination status with their veterinarian.
Even indoor-only rabbits can be at risk if the virus is introduced on shoes, clothing, or other materials. Vaccination remains the best layer of protection currently available.
